ABOUT

I am a professional nurse, but art has always been my passion: poetry, painting, photography. Being born and raised in the city of Chicago, culture and creativity has been embedded into my soul. I began writing early on, remembering my first winning essay around the age of 9 and later founded a poetry club in my high school. I have been a photography hobbyist for at least 10 years, continuing to learn something new everyday.

I was raised in a home where the use of natural products and remedies were the norm. I was taught to love myself, and beauty comes from within, but I was not taught to love my natural hair. I didn't even know what my natural texture felt like until I made the decision to big chop in July of 2010 after years of research. Yes, years! Thanks to lack of support from two people that play a major role in my life, i could not commit. Then a beautiful baby girl came along. How did I plan on teach her that the hair she was born with is beautiful when mommy is addicted to the creamy crack? The day after my last perm I vowed to not "relax" my curls anymore. Six weeks later I had my head shaved, my only regret being not doing it sooner. Many women say that being "natural" was an adjustment and they were not as comfortable at first. Well I believe that i was more frustrated with my natural hair. I felt a tremendous amount of relief and never felt more beautiful the moment I embraced my natural beauty. I encourage all women to embrace their natural texture!
I began making my own skin care products in 2007, and hair products in 2009 (actually before I was natural) because I found it nearly impossible to find natural, affordable products gentle enough for my daughter's sensitive skin and changing texture. Shortly after, Willow's Kys Natural Beauty was created and named after my daughter Willow.
